THINKING OF HAVING A HAMSTER?

So, you’ve decided to have a hamster as your pet. Like all pets, you need to understand that they have biological and emotional needs. You must be a responsible owner because when you own a pet, a life is in your hands. If you want to own a hamster just because it’s cute and playful then your reasons are a bit shallow. You have to make up your mind if you are ready to accept the hamster into your life including all responsibilities required from you. The needs and requirements of hamsters may be minimal but they still need the extra care and attention all pets need.

PROS

Nowadays, hamsters are the most popular and most sought after small pet in the whole world. They are inquisitive and entertaining pets that paint smiles on your faces. There are many pros in choosing the hamster as a pet. Some reasons include the following: they are relatively easy to care for, quiet, very affordable, don’t need cleaning and grooming, and they only require less space in the house. Because of these reasons, they are one of the best pets for children.

It is easy to care for since they have minimal needs. You only need to provide them with a clean home, fresh water, food, an exercise wheel, and lots of love. That's it.

Not only is purchasing a hamster inexpensive, keeping it is relatively cheap. The cages may be the only thing expensive ranging from P500.00-P2,000.00 depending on the features but you can always improvise. A plastic container (P50.00-P200 depending on the size) or an aquarium can also be used so you don’t have to fret.

CONS

IMO, their lifespan is shorter compared to other pets. We just have to cherish the little time we have with them. Next, untamed hamsters do bite. I had experienced this and it feels like something stapling my finger. However, with patience, you can tame them. Another disadvantage in owning a hamster is that it’s nocturnal. It is usually lively in the late afternoon and evening. Still, it is also an advantage to the working individuals and the students since they won’t be around during daytime. Hamster can escape cages and containers so you have to make sure you are buying the right cage size or a container that they can't chew. Speaking of chewing, hamsters love to chew. You have to give them something to chew on like toilet paper tubes.

Think wisely and accept all the challenges you’ll face as an owner. Be responsible. Finally, shower your hamster with lots of love and care.
